With over 700 Islands in the Bahamas where should one go? Well Eleuthera is a good one to start with. There are so many exciting and unique activities to do here that one will not be disappointed. You can fly, take a ferry over from Nassau or just like us simply sail there. Eleuthera refers to the island of Eleuthera as well as an archipelago which also includes a few small islands such as Harbour Island.
Explore Spanish Wells
A great place to start your exploration from is Spanish Wells, a colorful and clean settlement with everything one might need. Located in the Northern portion of Eleuthera it is actually on St. Georges Cay. Wander along the little streets, stroll on a spectacular sand bar on the North side or even grab a bite at Buddha’s Snack Bar. I was blown away at how many different houses there are, all very uniquely painted with so many colors.

Drift Dive Current’s Cut
If you want to spice things up and get wet visit the channel located between Harbour Island and Current Island. So much water rushes through here that it is said to have current speeds upwards to 10 knots during storms. Not to worry if you time it well or even get a guide with a motorboat you can enjoy the underwater world of the Bahamas. Hop in on one side to then drift at high speeds without even needing to swim while gazing at the sea life. Then get picked up on the other side of Current Cut. Be really careful of the current though as you won’t be able to swim against it in many places.

Sightsee the Glass Window Bridge
Who wouldn’t want to miss the “Narrowest Place on Earth”, so it’s all called anyways? This is a thin slice of land in North Eleuthera Island where there use to be a natural stone arch. Long gone and eroded by storms it now has a bridge separating where two very different bodies of water meet. The drastic change of colors from the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean on the West side to the turquoise Bahama Bank is definitely something not to miss along with the surrounding high limestone cliffs.

Soak at the Queen’s Bath
Still in the Northern part of Eleuthera Island the Queen’s Bath consists of tidal pools accessible at low tide. High tide might wash you away into the Atlantic as well as stormy days. However on a sunny and calm day make sure to bring your bathing suit and relax in one the pools of the Queen’s bath while watching the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Looking down at it you’ll notice the different shades of water which get warmed up by the sun just for you!

Journey to the center of the Earth at Hatchet Cave
Looking for something different and a little darker requiring light? Close to Alicetown there is the Hatchet Cave. With over a mile of tunnels stretching on three different levels this is a very exciting cave. Bring extra lights and water, it gets really hot in there. Most of the cave doesn’t require crawling but there are some ladders to explore deeper into the Hatchet Cave. Some bats live here and are easily disturbed by light. Make sure to refrain from touching too much the geological formation as they take years to form and are very fragile. Also if you want to bring the spelunking to another level take off your shoes and wade through water to other chambers.

Visit the pink sand beach of French Leave
If you want to soak in the true Bahamas paradise stop on Eleuthera Island, take a stroll on pink sand. French Leave beach stretches for over a mile and if the sun is shining you’ll notice it’s pink color. It’s the perfect tropical beach for a picnic, swimming or beach combing if the wind isn’t blowing too hard. The nearby town of Governor’s Harbour also has many things to offer for food and even little stores.

Marvel at Cathedral Cave
For a very accessible cave not requiring any light visit Cathedral Cave in Rock Sound in the South of Eleuthera Island. As the name suggest, its ceilings look like the ones from a cathedral. Light shines through hole in the ceiling and roots cascade down them reaching the ground. It is a spectacular sight and can be enjoyed by almost everyone. Nearby is Boiling Hole and Ocean Hole where you can jump in to cool down.

With so many activities and things to see in Eleuthera one might not want to leave. We didn’t explore the entirety of the island as we were on a sailboat ruled by the wind and waves but we loved it! And if you want to see more adventures about our time in the Bahamas visit our YouTube Channel.
