What do millennial want in a home? Seems like most of us veer off from the traditional route that our parents took. Saving money for a deposit and then getting locked down in a 25 year mortgage is not that appealing. We want something more. A LIFESTYLE choice. The perfect millennial home nowadays comes in different shapes and sizes. From tiny homes, to caravans/RVs or sailboats, they all lead to the same thing; freedom. Not all millennial want this nomadic or unorthodox way of living but here are some of our favorites.

The Millennial Home

Why?

Because we don’t want to get stuck into the monotone and routine type lifestyle. A conventional type of house restricts you to a specific location which you have to decide on and stick with for years to come whilst stuck with a hefty mortgage. Plus we do not want live to work to pay off a home which we then don’t even spend much time in. A travel lifestyle and the global knowledge has drastically changed the home buying trends of many, especially for the millennial.

Money?

We may not be the richest ones. However, some millennial tend to value more life experiences than accumulating things. You can have all the money in the world or get a mortgage and try to fit in. But in the end it leaves you with an unfulfilled desire to wander off and see more. Ultimately it is not so much about as how much money you make as to how much time you have to do the things you care about. Thus spending less money on a house leaves you with bigger savings to take a vacation, try a new hobby and spend time with family and the ones you care about.

Millennial Home Options

There are many alternatives available as to where to live nowadays. The tiny house trend is blooming with more and more people either building their own house and even cities promoting them and changing their by-laws to be more accommodating. Being a cheaper option and requiring less space to be built on along with the option of moving them around makes tiny houses quite appealing to many millennial.

Another great one is the caravan or RV. It allows you to travel wherever you want while bringing with you your home. They come in all sizes and shapes from school buses being renovated to mini-vans being turned into great living spaces. And you get to combine your car and home into one space, leaving you with a whole world to explore. Some have even shipped them via big cargo ships across continents.

Our personal favorite and the one we settled on is the boat or more specifically sailboat. Now talk about expanding your horizons. You can either explore the whole world across the 7 seas or settle on a marina. Some locations offer year-long living most northern countries will force you to head South or haul-out your boat for the winter season. We recently purchased a sailboat which we have been refitting in hopes of sailing away next fall. Follow our journey on YouTube.

With all these millennial home options which one is perfect? Everyone of them fits a certain type of person from the tiny house to an RV or a boat. And not all millennial want to live this way there are still many who prefer the comfort of a traditional house. So find who you are and what fits your aspirations best.

Aspire!
