I often take it for granted that Canada experiences such drastic changes throughout its four seasons. Which means the fall colours are absolutely spectacular especially on the East Coast of Canada, between Newfoundland and Ontario. This also draws many tourists from all over the world to enjoy this intense and quick change in foliage.

Fall colours peak tends to happen between late September to Early October. The West Coast of Newfoundland near Corner Brook and the Humber Valley area boasts many maple trees. Their peak fall colours’ foliage changes from oranges and yellows to bright reds. One could think the forest is on fire with all the bright colours it looks.

While evergreen trees stay green year around, as its name suggests, deciduous trees change colour before loosing all of its leaves in preparation of winter. During the summer those leaves contain high levels of chlorophyll which gives them their green colour. However, as the cold temperatures and shorter days approach the trees start getting ready for winter which leads to a lack of chlorophyll. Due to this we start seeing other pigments that were inhibited by the chlorophyll. Revealing brilliant yellow, orange and red. Also interesting is the high correlation in the type of fall weather and the fall colours. The brightest colours will show up if days are warm and sunny and nights cold. A windy and rainy fall would shorten those brilliant colours’ duration.

    1. The fall colours change so quickly. One cold snap and everything turns red than a rainy and windy day then everything is gone. But usually, in Newfoundland the fall colours happen late September to mid-October. Ottawa area is more or less around the same time.
