Green Gardens is the perfect combination of adventure and civilization. Nestled on Newfoundland‘s West Coast it is part of the greater World UNESCO Site of Gros Morne National Park. Immediately after leaving either of the 2 parking lots, different types of vegetation and scenery embrace you. A well marked path showcases a trail map at the intersections.
Green Gardens’ hike can be done in a single day or as an overnight requiring you to carry your tent. Most visitors hike the 9km return trail from Long Pond trailhead. However there are also two other options; a 15.5km loop from Long Pond parking and a 16km loop from Wallace Brook.
As one meanders through lush meadows keep your eyes open for the famous Green Gardens sheep. Every summer they come to this summer pasture. The coastline offers a vast array of sea stacks, bald eagles, lush fields and stunning landscapes. It also is a great location to watch sunsets and a myriad of stars.
One should know that the trail can become extremely muddy and slippery after the spring and periods of heavy rain. Furthermore, keep in mind that some of the stairs are in rough shape in some sections.
Green Gardens campsites
According to Parks Canada there are three primitive campsites scattered along the coastline. However the best one is the one closest to long Pond trailhead just beside the long staircase leading to the beach. It offers wooden platforms, picnic tables along with the famous park’s red chairs. Hikers should cautiously walk down the stairs leading to the beach. At low tide head to the right where you will find a massive sea cave with amethyst.
