Koh Pha Ngan is an idyllic island off the East coast of Thailand in South East Asia. I first discovered it while backpacking with my parents at the age of 4 and went back with them for another 5-6 months trip when I was 10 years old. This lead Cory and I to heading back there during our Round the World trip. Wow the changes in 16 years were incredible but Koh Pha Ngan still surprised me as we explore around. And yes everyone talks about the Full Moon parties of Haad Rin but there is so much more better things to see and experience. So here’s my 5 must do.
Rent a scooter to drive around Koh Pha Ngan Island
The island isn’t very big, only 125 km² square and the best way to take it all in is by renting a scooter. But be cautious there are a lot of bad and inexperienced drivers. Most places will require you to leave a big damage deposit or to leave your passport with them.
Eat at the night market in Thong Sala
The many resorts around Koh Pha Ngan can be quite pricey for eating. Although there are so many options we loved going to the night market in Thong Sala. There were so many delightful options at very affordable prices. From fruit juices to veggie rolls, Thai pancakes, No names or insects there is something for every taste bud.
Snorkel around Mae Haad
Koh Pha Ngan offers many different types of beaches and one of our favorites for snorkeling was at Mae Haad in the North-West of the island. We would jump into the tropical waters right in front of our bungalow and venture around the colorful corals while staring at the thousands of fish. There are various depths for everyone’s preference. Also exciting is the loop around Ko Ma island which offer deeper snorkeling.
Swim at Than Nam Rak waterfall
Try to visit Than Nam Rak waterfall after some rain or the monsoons before it can become very dry during the summer months. A nice trail follows the different levels. However for the more adventurous I would suggest following the actual stream if the water isn’t too high or intense. There are great swimming holes to cool down into.
Rock hop at Bottle Beach
Accessing this beach can be challenging but all the more rewarding. It is located on the North coast of Koh Pha Ngan.
Option 1 Take a boat to Bottle Beach
Option 2 Drive down a treacherous dirt road. DO NOT ATTEMPT if inexperienced or during the rainy season.
Bottle beach boast beautiful white sand and no corals. It’s a prefect location to enjoy the Gulf of Thailand. A stunning coastline of boulders enticing one to climb onto, jump off and hop along for hours of pleasure!
