Aloha Snorkel, Top spots

Aloha snorkel top spots, hanauma bay, snorkeling hawaii, Wildly Intrepid

Have you ever wanted to visit Hawaii without breaking your bank? Snorkel is the solution. Oahu Island makes ones believe that you need a lot of money and deters backpackers. However there are many free or inexpensive activities such as snorkeling.

During our trip we had multiple opportunities to snorkel. We already had a mask and tuba and we ended up buying a second kit for only US$20. You can either buy a set or borrow one from many hostels at no cost. Fins can be quite handy but were too bulky for my bag so we made due without. Here are some bays and beaches we went to in order of preference.

Hanauma Bay

1- Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

For an admission fee of only US$7.50 (as of 2015) we enjoyed a rich diversity of sea life. All of which is located inside a crater that is partly submerged by the Pacific ocean. From puffer fish to parrot fish or green sea turtles and eels my amazement never ceased. A vast array of colours and shapes keeps you entertained for hours. Don’t forget your sunscreen and camera. This park was great.

2- Tide pool at Shark’s Cove (North Shore)

Free of charge this one offered quite the show. Schools of fish surrounded us as well as sea cucumbers and fish of bright shades. When the tide rises, waves crash over the rock wall making it harder to see fish and to stand still.

3-Waikiki beach (on the Eastern end just south of the zoo)

Another free snorkel spot and walking distance to most hotels and hostels. Many colourful fish swim around small reefs. Since it isn’t in a bay waves can make snorkeling challenging. Beware of sharp corals. The best area is across from the zoo: at the end of the rock pier. Ask the lifeguards.

4-Bay just West of Halona Blow Hole

This small sandy beach and cliff jumping area doesn’t have as many fish. The water can have more movement but you can dive deeper in between corals and caves. You just have to hold your breath long enough to snorkel further.

In short there are plenty of snorkeling areas in Hawaii around Oahu Island, more than the ones described. Be adventurous and talk to locals to see the astonishing sea fauna and flora.

Enjoy the ocean, reefs and fish at  low or no cost.

Live Wildly Intrepid!

Carpe Diem
