Around the World trips sound quite exciting. But before the fun starts you’ve got to do some travel planning. Preparing things sets you in the travel mood. One of the big question Cory and I asked each other was: “What kind of airplane ticket should we get?”. There are those attractive Around the World ticket that you can purchase with all your pre-determined stops. On the other hand there’s also One-way tickets, which after further research seemed cheaper then the first option. It also suited our needs better since we wanted to keep our options open when it came to choosing destinations and dates.
After that there’s also dealing with all the things you are leaving behind; car, cancelling cellphone plans, storing your belongings and travel insurance to name a few. Furthermore, we had to apply for visas for Australia and Indonesia before leaving the country. And something really important to mention is to call your credit card in order to let them know that you will be traveling abroad. Though we still got blocked when we landed in Indonesia and our bank thought someone had stolen our cards. I also learnt the hard way in Honduras when mine got blocked. First day in the country and no local currency. Thanks to my spare US money we got by until I manage to get the visa card running again. So ALWAYS carry some US money with you.
Lastly is packing. What to bring? What to bring? I always bring too many things. The key is to pack light since traveling in crowded transportation can be challenging with huge backpacks. It also makes it cheaper on airplanes with all those weight fees. Pack it all, unpack and repack with even less.
All this travel planning is part of the trip and is quite exciting. It is also key in making your travel experience more enjoyable. Learning and researching facts and destinations in the countries you will be visiting jump starts the travel bug.
